For years, I pictured the Maldives as a place only for honeymooners. Endless white sands, turquoise waters, and those iconic overwater villas seemed reserved for couples. As a 30-something traveler who enjoys solo trips and adventures with friends, I dismissed it as “maybe one day.” But I realized I was using “being single” as an excuse not to visit a place I’d always dreamed of. So, I recently visited Kandima Maldives with a friend and discovered this paradise is much more than just a romantic getaway. It’s a vibrant destination with endless activities, perfect for an unforgettable trip with your besties.
Exploring Kandima Maldives
The stereotype of the Maldives is that it’s a destination solely for relaxing on the beach, doing very little else. While that kind of blissful escape is certainly possible, Kandima offers a refreshing change with a wealth of activities. This is one of the largest resorts in the Maldives, stretching across 3 kilometers, which means there’s ample space to explore. My days there were whatever I wanted them to be: packed with adventure, completely chilled, or a mix of both.
For those who enjoy being active, there’s a state-of-the-art gym that rivals city fitness centers, along with tennis and volleyball courts. The water sports here are plentiful. I tried paddleboarding, kayaking in clear-bottomed boats, and snorkeling. Gliding through the clear water, it was incredible to see turtles and stingrays swimming below.
Kandima also organizes daily excursions. I jumped at the chance to go on a dolphin-spotting boat trip and saw around 50 dolphins – it was truly a special experience. The resort’s app is a lifesaver for planning your day, making it easy to sign up for activities or check what’s happening that evening. One of my favorite experiences was the sunset yoga sessions on the beach. There’s something incredibly peaceful about stretching as the waves crash and the sky turns shades of orange and pink.
What’s there to eat?
I admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect regarding dining in the Maldives. I wondered if the food would be fresh, if there would be enough variety, and if I might get bored. Kandima exceeded all my expectations. With multiple restaurants offering a diverse mix of cuisines, there’s something to suit every palate.
My favorite dining spot was SeaDragon, a chic Chinese-inspired restaurant serving the freshest seafood. Their spicy lobster was a standout dish. The variety extends further; the international buffet was perfect for breakfast, and I also enjoyed a memorable meal with Mediterranean-inspired dishes at Azure. For a more relaxed meal, the beachfront cafe offered poolside favorites like fresh salads and flatbreads, which were perfect after a morning of water activities.
And if you want to make breakfast an Instagram-worthy moment, the floating breakfast trays available in your private infinity pool are a luxurious way to start the day. Waking up to that view and enjoying breakfast delivered right to your pool is quite an experience.
Is there nightlife?
While the Maldives is known for its tranquility, Kandima offers options for when the sun goes down. Each night brought something different, from full moon parties with DJ sets to elegant white parties by the pool. The atmosphere struck a perfect balance: sophisticated yet fun, and a great way to connect with other guests. For more laid-back evenings, the resort features live music and low-key cocktail bars where you can enjoy expertly mixed drinks.
The craft cocktails here rival those found in top bars around the world. It’s a sophisticated yet relaxed vibe that makes you feel at home, even thousands of miles away from it. I enjoyed trying different creations while listening to live music, a lovely way to unwind after a day of exploring.
Relaxation and Rejuvenation
Beyond the activities and nightlife, the Maldives experience wouldn’t be complete without dedicated relaxation. Kandima’s Eskape spa is a haven, offering a comprehensive range of luxurious treatments designed to soothe your soul. From full-body scrubs to detoxifying body wraps, there is a treatment to address every need.
I opted for a 60-minute Balinese massage, and it was worth every moment. For those looking to enhance their spa experience, booking one of their Reset Packages is recommended. These allow you to tailor massages, facials, or body treatments to your exact preferences, often with serene beachside locations.
I found that scheduling a spa treatment for the late afternoon, after a day full of activities, was the perfect way to transition into a relaxed evening. The calming atmosphere of the spa, combined with the skilled therapists, made for an unforgettable wellness experience.
Accommodation Options
Kandima Maldives truly changed my perception of the destination. It proved to be not only romantic and idyllic but also social, vibrant, and packed with activities, making it a fantastic choice for a group trip, a birthday celebration, or even a pre-wedding gathering.
For an especially memorable stay, the waterfront villas are highly recommended. Waking up to those expansive ocean views is a truly next-level experience. However, if you are looking for something more budget-conscious, the studios are equally chic and ideal for sharing with friends. I’ve stayed in both types of rooms, and each offered a comfortable and stylish base for exploring the island.
When selecting accommodation, consider how much time you plan to spend in your room. If it’s primarily for sleeping and showering, the studios offer excellent value. If you’re looking for that quintessential overwater villa experience, then the villas are the way to go. Both options provide access to the resort’s amenities and the beautiful surroundings.
What are the practicalities of visiting?
Getting to the Maldives involves flying into Velana International Airport (MLE) near the capital, Malé. From there, you will need to take a seaplane or a domestic flight followed by a speedboat transfer to reach your resort. The seaplane journey itself offers stunning aerial views of the atolls, which is an experience in its own right.
I learned that booking your transfers through the resort in advance is essential. It streamlines the arrival process immensely, as they coordinate the best options based on your flight schedule. When you arrive at the dedicated seaplane terminal or speedboat jetty, the resort staff usually meet you to assist with your luggage and guide you to your next mode of transport. The journey from the airport to Kandima can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on the transfer method. It’s worth noting that seaplanes typically operate only during daylight hours, so your arrival or departure time might influence this option.
Navigating around Kandima is very straightforward due to its size and layout. The resort provides bicycles for guests to use, which I found to be the most enjoyable way to get around the 3-kilometer stretch of the island. There are also buggies available if you prefer not to cycle, especially if the weather is particularly warm or if you have a lot to carry. For exploring the waters, snorkeling gear is readily available, and the resort offers rentals for various water sports equipment.
When is the best time to visit?
The Maldives enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it’s warm year-round. However, there are two main seasons to consider: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, generally from December to April, offers the most sunshine, calm seas, and lower humidity, making it ideal for water activities and beach lounging.
The wet season runs from May to November, and while it’s characterized by higher rainfall, it’s important to note that the rain often comes in short, heavy bursts rather than continuous downpours. This period can also bring stronger winds and rougher seas. A lesser-known benefit of visiting during the wet season is that the resort prices can be more attractive, and there are fewer crowds. I found that even during the wetter months, there were still plenty of sunny periods, and the rain showers were often brief, allowing for a full day of activities.
For photography enthusiasts, the periods just before and after the main dry season (late November and May) can offer a good balance of pleasant weather with potentially softer light and fewer people. I’ve found that packing light, breathable clothing is key regardless of the season, along with high SPF sunscreen and a good hat. Remember that the sun is very strong, even on cloudy days in the Maldives.
So, if you’ve been waiting for a honeymoon to tick the Maldives off your bucket list, stop waiting. Whether you make it a standalone trip or pair it with a stopover, Kandima offers a vibrant and activity-filled experience that you’ll want to revisit.
