The sand here is incredibly fine and soft, and the water is shallow and calm, making it perfect for just wading and enjoying the sun.

I loved spending time at Playa Norte. The beach clubs dotted along the shore provide a great place to relax with a drink. Many offer a toes-in-the-sand dining experience, which is exactly what I look for on a tropical getaway.

The western coast is beautifully protected, which means you can expect calm, clear waters. This makes it ideal for trying out some of the water sports or simply swimming without worry. For Lily, who’s seven, the gentle waves were perfect for splashing around.

For a taste of traditional, homemade local food, Loncheria Alexia y Geovanny near the Mercado Municipal is a must. The tacos and fresh fish are superb, and it’s a spot beloved by locals, which is always a good sign. It felt like a true slice of authentic island life.

If there’s one dish you have to try, it’s the Tikin Xic fish. This is considered the most representative dish of Isla Mujeres. It’s marinated with achiote, wrapped in banana leaves, and grilled to perfection. Served with red onion, salad, and rice, it’s a flavor combination that’s truly delicious.

Coco Restaurant & Beach Bar, right on Playa Norte, is the perfect spot for sunset. Watching the sky turn fiery colors while enjoying fresh fish or shrimp skewers was a highlight. I recommend sipping a tropical cocktail from the second floor for the best view.

Stingray offers a relaxed vibe that many travelers appreciate. With swing chairs around the bar and live music upstairs, it’s a popular spot on Avenida Hidalgo, close to Playa Norte. The upstairs features a rooftop palapa, and downstairs sometimes hosts karaoke.

Mexico is a year-round destination, but for Isla Mujeres, the period from December to March offers my preferred weather. The days are bright and sunny, with slightly cooler, breezy evenings. During this time, the average high is around 83°F (28°C).

The lowest prices are found during the low season, from September to November, but this period coincides with hurricane season, so be prepared for more rainfall, with October being the wettest month.

Most visitors arrive at Isla Mujeres via ferry from the Gran Puerto Cancun ferry dock in Puerto Juarez, just a short distance from downtown Cancun. Ultramar ferries run frequently, typically every half hour from early morning until late evening. The crossing itself is quick, taking only about 15 minutes.
