Rental businesses are plentiful, making it easy to pick one up right after you arrive by ferry from Cancun. The roads are narrow, and golf carts are well-suited to the island’s pace. Scooters and taxis are also readily available for getting to different parts of the island.
For families traveling with young children, like my own Lily and Ethan, the golf cart offers a safe and fun way to see the sights. We loved packing a picnic and exploring at our own pace, stopping whenever we spotted a particularly colorful house or a beautiful stretch of beach. It makes the journey as enjoyable as the destination.
Punta Sur Exploration
At the southern tip of the island, you’ll find Punta Sur, a dramatic rocky cliffside offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea. When Michael and I visited Punta Sur, we took dozens of photos. The sheer drop to the turquoise water below was awe-inspiring. We found Playa Norte to be the perfect spot for our family. The kids built sandcastles for hours while Michael and I relaxed under an umbrella. The gentle lapping of the waves and the warm sun on our skin created a truly idyllic scene. It’s the kind of place that lives up to all the postcards.
Underwater Wonders
Just offshore from Isla Mujeres lies the Cancún Underwater Museum of Art, or MUSA. This unique museum features over 500 life-sized sculptures submerged on the shallow seafloor. Accessed by dive or snorkel boats, it’s an innovative way to promote coral life and has become a major attraction. The sculptures are designed to encourage coral growth, creating a living work of art. Seeing these figures silently resting beneath the waves is an unforgettable experience.
Although we didn’t dive this time, we took a glass-bottomed boat tour to see MUSA. It was fascinating to peer down at the various statues, imagining the vibrant marine life that now calls them home. The kids were captivated, pointing out the different shapes and figures as we glided over them. It’s a truly unique attraction that showcases art and conservation in a remarkable way.
Garrafon Park Adventures
For those seeking a bit more adventure, Garrafon Park offers a zip line that launches adventurers from a 42-foot tower. You’ll soar over cliffs, crashing waves, and the multi-hued ocean waters for an exhilarating ride and incredible views. The park also provides opportunities for snorkeling and kayaking, allowing you to experience the marine environment up close. It’s a place where you can enjoy both thrilling activities and the island’s natural beauty.
Whale Shark Encounters
Between June and September, Isla Mujeres becomes a prime spot for swimming with whale sharks. These gentle giants of the deep migrate to the plankton-rich waters off the coast, and guided tours offer a chance to snorkel with them. These magnificent creatures can reach up to 40 feet in length, and seeing hundreds of them during their migration is an extraordinary spectacle. Witnessing their slow, graceful movements and their massive mouths feeding is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Turtle Conservation

Even the town cemetery has a vibrant entrance, reflecting the island’s colorful spirit.

Isla Mujeres is a foodie’s delight, offering a diverse range of dining options, many with stunning ocean views. Beach clubs, which are essentially restaurants and bars set directly on the sand, are a popular way to spend the day. These spots often feature swimming pools and provide comfortable loungers, hammocks, and tables, all while serving food and drinks. You can enjoy everything from fresh seafood to classic Mexican dishes and international cuisine.
For a truly memorable meal, consider Mar-Bella Rawbar and Grill. This thatched-roof restaurant is right on the beach, offering picturesque ocean views, swaying palms, and a wooden pier. You can watch sailboats glide by while enjoying tropical drinks and Yucatan specialties. We had an amazing seafood platter here one evening, with the sound of the waves providing a perfect soundtrack.
