I’ve always been drawn to the idea of a luxurious beachfront escape, and Hawaii certainly delivers. For a truly special stay, the idea of having your own villa or bungalow, just steps from the sand, is incredibly appealing. While you won’t find overwater bungalows like in some other tropical destinations, Hawaii offers incredible oceanfront villas that feel like a private slice of paradise.
Maui’s Wailea Region
Maui’s Wailea region on the south shore is a prime spot for these types of luxurious accommodations. It’s home to a collection of stunning oceanfront villas at some of the island’s top resorts.
Fairmont Kea Lani Villas
The Fairmont Kea Lani offers a collection of two-story villas that are a dream for families or groups. I love that these are designed as spacious homes away from home, with options ranging from two to four bedrooms.
When we visited Wailea with the kids, looking for a place that offered both privacy and resort amenities was key. The villas here, with their fully equipped kitchens and separate living areas, made it so much easier to manage early bedtimes and early morning breakfasts without disturbing anyone.
Each villa boasts a private courtyard, some with their own plunge pool, which was perfect for the kids to splash in while Michael and I enjoyed a quiet moment. The proximity to Polo Beach is fantastic; you can literally walk out and feel the sand between your toes in moments. It made spontaneous beach trips so easy. Remember to pack your sunscreen and hats; the sun can be quite strong, especially during midday.
Wailea Beach Resort Villas
The Wailea Beach Resort, part of Marriott, also has impressive oceanfront villas. They’ve introduced new options with one to four bedrooms, complementing their existing rooms. These villas come with gourmet kitchens, ideal if you plan to do some cooking or even arrange for private chef experiences.
I’ve found that having a well-equipped kitchen is a game-changer, especially when traveling with young children. It allows for flexibility with meals and snacks. The spa-like bathrooms here sound like a wonderful place to unwind after a day of exploring.
Andaz Maui Villas
Andaz Maui offers contemporary, residential-style villas inspired by the island’s natural beauty. The premier Makai oceanfront villas are positioned right by Mōkapu Beach, which is wonderfully convenient. Other villas offer sweeping ocean views from slightly elevated positions.
The details in these villas, like the full kitchens with high-end appliances and the private lanais with grills and lounges, speak to a truly elevated experience. Some even offer private plunge pools or hot tubs, adding an extra layer of indulgence. I always appreciate the thought put into outdoor living spaces in tropical settings; these lanais are perfect for enjoying the island breeze and the evening sky.
Royal Lahaina Bungalows
On West Maui’s Ka’anapali shore, the Royal Lahaina Bungalows offer a different vibe. While perhaps more modest than some of the larger resort villas, they still provide excellent beach access and comfortable accommodations. The Royal Beach House Suite, for instance, offers a private lanai, pool, and hot tub, plus gated beach access, making it a luxurious option for a smaller group or family.

At the Four Seasons Hualalai, you can find three exquisite oceanfront villas, each featuring private pools and spacious balconies or terraces. The names themselves – Hawaii Loa Presidential Villa, Makaloa Villa, and Ho’onanea Villa – suggest a level of grandeur and exclusivity.
When we looked into staying in a villa here, the idea of having our own private pool was a huge draw, especially with the kids. It means we could enjoy a swim any time without the crowds, and the spacious balconies offer incredible vantage points for watching the sunset. It’s a nice way to have a controlled and comfortable experience, even in a tropical setting.

The proximity to the beach means you can start your day with a walk along the shore and end it with a relaxing dip in your own pool.

The idea of staying in a low-rise building that echoes the island’s history, while still being steps from a beautiful beach like Hanalei Bay, is very attractive. It offers a sense of place that you don’t always get in larger resorts.
Kauai’s Whaler’s Cove
In Poipu, Kauai, the lawn-level condos at Whaler’s Cove provide unique, uninterrupted ocean views framed by swaying coconut palms. The resort’s curved architecture, facing the ocean, can make you feel as though you’re on a cruise ship, hovering above a panoramic view.
Maui’s Wailea Elua Village
Wailea Elua Village on Maui’s south shore features luxurious three-bedroom oceanfront condos. Being just steps from Ulua Beach and adjacent to the Wailea shoreline walking path provides wonderful access to both the beach and the resort’s amenities.
Walking paths along the coast are one of my favorite ways to explore a destination. Having direct access to one from our accommodation, especially with the ocean on one side and beautiful landscaping on the other, makes for such pleasant mornings or evenings. The convenience of being so close to a beautiful beach like Ulua is also a major plus.
Maui’s Kapalua Bay Villas
Kapalua Bay Villas, situated on Kapalua Bay, offers deluxe one and two-bedroom villas. These are set in a more secluded and sunny location, away from the main hustle and bustle, providing a sense of tranquility yet still offering beautiful ocean views.
