The flight is relatively short from the East Coast, and you’ll find beautiful beaches, friendly people, and delicious food. For a truly all-inclusive experience where everything is handled, consider Club Med resorts, which offer packages that can include flights, airport transfers, and excursions, allowing you to focus simply on packing.

Club Med has two distinct properties in the Dominican Republic: Club Med Punta Cana and Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda. Both cater to families, but they offer different vibes and amenities.

Club Med Punta Cana

This is Club Med’s main family-focused resort. From the moment you book, you can sign up your children for the Mini Club program, which provides a full day of activities for ages 4 and up. These include crafts, tennis, archery, and even circus lessons. For younger children, under 4, childcare is available on demand for an extra fee. This can be a lifesaver for parents who want an uninterrupted dinner.

I found the Mini Club facilities here to be quite impressive. There’s a shallow splash zone perfect for cooling off, dedicated rooms for dining and activities, and plenty of playground equipment. Watching the kids dive into water games and pirate scavenger hunts makes you appreciate the effort put into keeping them entertained.

Accommodations at Punta Cana

I stayed in a two-bedroom family room that worked well for a family of five. It had a master bedroom and bathroom, plus a separate kids’ room with two twin beds. There was another bathroom in the hall and a balcony. These rooms are conveniently located near the Mini Club and the main restaurant.

If you’re traveling with an infant, you can reserve a complimentary “Club Med Baby Welcome Kit” in advance. It comes with essentials like a baby bathtub, bottle warmer, changing table, crib, and stroller. This made packing a bit lighter than usual.

For those seeking more space and privacy, the Exclusive Collection area offers upgraded suites with amenities like room service for breakfast and a private pool.

When the kids are busy at Mini Club, the Zen Oasis is a quiet, adults-only area with its own pool. You can even book accommodations in this more secluded part of the resort if you prefer a tranquil escape.

Dining at Punta Cana

There are three restaurants included in the all-inclusive package. Hispaniola is a buffet spot that kids usually love, especially for breakfast with its omelet station and dinner with a chocolate fountain. It offers ocean views and has been recently renovated.

For a la carte dining with ocean views, Indigo is a great choice. I enjoyed perfectly grilled meats and flavorful sides there. They also offer local Dominican dishes, like a tasty curry plate. Samana Restaurant, which was closed for maintenance during my visit, serves a variety of international cuisines including Caribbean, French, Italian, and Asian.

Things to Do at Punta Cana

Club Med Punta Cana offers a packed schedule of activities, easily accessible through their app. You can join in organized beach volleyball, power walking, or enjoy nightly performances. I found the themed nights, like “white night” or “black/gold,” to be a fun way for guests to get into the festive spirit, though participation is entirely voluntary.

During the day, the beach is perfect for relaxing or trying watersports like snorkeling and sailing. While the resort has gear available, bringing your own goggles or floaties might be more comfortable. I noticed the lobby shops were well-stocked with any forgotten essentials.

For a bit of pampering, the onsite spa offers massages and facials for an additional fee. The indoor/outdoor spa space is beautiful, and you can even book a couples massage with an ocean view.

Getting to Punta Cana

Convenience is a big plus here. You’ll fly into Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). From there, it’s just about a 20-minute shuttle ride to the resort, making for a quick transition from your flight to vacation mode. It honestly couldn’t be simpler.

Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda

This resort is nestled in a more natural, jungle-like setting. The journey from the airport takes around 1.5 hours by shuttle, but the scenery changes dramatically, and the open-air lobby with a welcome drink sets a relaxing tone.

Michès offers an elevated service experience, including a pre-arrival concierge and superior room amenities. All rooms have access to breakfast room service, which is incredibly convenient when traveling with children.

Sustainability is a focus here. The resort has its own water bottling facility, which means no single-use plastic bottles. You’ll find glass bottles in your room, refilled regularly, and water-filling stations throughout the property.

Accommodations at Michès

The resort is divided into four “villages,” each with a distinct atmosphere. Explorer Cove, where I stayed, provided easy access to the main pool, Mini Club, and the beach. The Deluxe Family Rooms are well-suited for families, offering a master bedroom, a separate kids’ room with two twin beds, and two bathrooms. Limited snacks and beverages are stocked in the in-room fridge, along with a Nespresso machine.

Other villages include Caribbean Paradise, a vibrant area for families and couples; Zen Oasis, a tranquil spot for everyone; and Archipelago, an exclusive area for adults with suites. Regardless of where you stay, adults have access to the Zen Pool, a stunning green pool with hammocks, a swim-up bar, and plenty of space for sunbathing or reading in the shade. It’s hard to pull yourself away from this area.

Mini Club at Michès

Similar to Punta Cana, children aged 4 and up can join the Mini Club program at Michès, with activities like circus school, water play, crafts, and theater. For infants as young as 4 months, childcare can be booked for an additional fee. The splash pad in the Mini Club area is accessible to all families, even if you’re not using the club services that day. The dump bucket is always a huge hit with the little ones.

Dining at Michès

The culinary offerings at Michès are exceptional. There’s a coffee shop serving hot and cold coffee drinks, frozen yogurt, pastries, and small sandwiches. The buffet at Cayuco has a wide variety, from fresh fruit and Asian bowls to made-to-order pancakes. Adults can opt to dine in a separate, adult-only section if they wish. Don’t miss the signature white chocolate bread, and keep an eye out for the “Secret Chocolate Room” experience on select nights.

Coco Plum focuses on local specialties, with many seafood options and vegetarian choices. Trying the fish tacos while listening to the waves is highly recommended. Coal & Copper, the resort’s steakhouse, is available for an additional fee and offers a memorable dining experience with large portions.

Things to Do at Michès

There’s a wide range of activities at Club Med Michès. The treetop palapa is a picturesque spot for morning yoga before heading to the Zen Pool. You can also find tennis lessons, fitness classes, watersports, and circus lessons. Balancing relaxation with the many activities is part of the fun.

The spa at Club Med Michès is excellent. Before or after your treatment, you can enjoy the three plunge pools, which range from refreshingly cold to hot. It’s a perfect place to unwind.

Nightly entertainment includes performances like traditional Dominican dancers and circus acts. Checking the Club Med app daily will help you stay updated on the schedule.

Visiting Club Med in the Dominican Republic

If you want to experience both resorts, you can arrange a day trip from Michès to Club Med Punta Cana. Some visitors even split their stays between the two properties for a varied experience.

In Michès, mosquitoes can be prevalent around dusk, so it’s a good idea to use provided bug spray or bring your own. The resort does spray the grounds regularly.

It’s wise to book your desired Mini Club sessions in advance or as soon as you arrive at the resort, as spots can fill up quickly.

Many families find it helpful to bring strollers or foldable wagons. Pool floaties are also allowed and are available for purchase at the gift shops at both locations.

Club Med truly excels at welcoming families, creating spaces for parents to relax, and bringing guests together for events. It offers a fun, all-inclusive family vacation experience.
