Planning Your BVI Sailing Course: Qualifications, Timing, Packing

ASA certifications (101–106 plus 114 catamaran) are widely recognized for bareboat charters. After ASA 104 you can apply for an International Proficiency Certificate (IPC), required in many international waters. If you prefer RYA qualifications, Sunsail offers RYA-recognized training centres in Greece, Croatia, and the UK — you can complete courses like Competent Crew or Day Skipper there, then charter in the BVI. Minimum age for RYA Competent Crew is 12; Day Skipper requires age 16. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.
Courses run November to June, with the dry season (December–May) offering the most reliable weather. Expect steady trade winds of 15–20 knots, warm temperatures around 80°F (27°C), and mostly sunny skies. July through October is hurricane season — most schools do not operate then.

Courses start at The Moorings in Road Town, Tortola. Fly into Terrance B. Lettsome Airport (EIS) on Tortola, or connect via St. Thomas (STT) and take a ferry to Tortola. Arrive at least a day before your course begins; most end before noon on the final day. Accommodation is included in liveaboard courses; for marina-based schools, you’ll need to arrange your own lodging.
