Bonaire used to be known almost exclusively for its amazing diving, and that’s still true today. But recently, the island has become a serious food destination. It’s a culinary scene that reflects its diverse heritage, with influences from Holland, Indonesia, South America, and the West Indies. You’ll find fresh seafood, strong flavors, and some of the most beautiful waterfront dining spots in the Caribbean. This is the Bonaire I’ve come to love—great food in even better settings, perfect for a special meal with Michael or a fun outing with Lily and Ethan.
Extraordinary Dining Experiences
Brass Boer
If you’re looking for something truly special, Brass Boer is the place. Created by Dutch chefs Jonnie and Thérèse Boer, it has a refined yet relaxed feel right on the water at . The food is artful, with dishes like the famously intricate “Egg Caviar.” The whole experience feels spectacular—world-class cooking with a distinct Caribbean rhythm. It’s a standout not just on Bonaire, but across the region.
We visited on a quiet Tuesday evening. Lily was fascinated by the detail on the plates, and Michael really enjoyed the wine suggestions. The sea breeze made it feel so relaxed, even with the high-quality food.
CHEFS Bonaire
This isn’t a typical restaurant; it’s an intimate dinner experience. CHEFS is set in a private villa with only 16 seats, making it incredibly exclusive. The menu changes daily, and the surprise is part of the fun. You sit at the kitchen bar, and the chefs explain each dish, often made with ingredients sourced that very morning. It’s like a story told through food, and each plate is a new chapter. It’s an experience that truly stays with you.
We booked this for a special celebration. The chefs were so engaging with the kids, telling them about the fresh fish. Ethan, who is usually shy, was asking them questions about everything!
Italian Elegance and Ocean Views
Capriccio
Capriccio offers fine Italian dining with the perfect ocean breeze. Here, handmade pastas are paired with the freshest seafood. The lobster ravioli is a must-try, and their signature carpaccio, available with beef, octopus, or lobster, sets a sophisticated tone. The courtyard is beautifully lit, and the gentle breeze adds to the ambiance. It feels cosmopolitan, yet authentically Bonairean—casual, creative, and confident. Their wine list is also incredibly comprehensive, the best you’ll find on the island.
Michael loved exploring the extensive wine list. I found the atmosphere incredibly romantic, especially with the soft lighting in the courtyard.
Seafood Stars
It Rains Fishes
This restaurant was a pioneer in Bonaire’s food scene and remains a top choice. Located right on the boulevard in Kralendijk, It Rains Fishes specializes in incredibly fresh seafood, often caught just hours before it’s served. Think tuna, lionfish, wahoo, and snapper. The service is polished, the wines crisp, and the views stretch out to the open sea. It’s a timeless spot that reminds you why you came to Bonaire.
We took the kids here for lunch one afternoon. Lily loved watching the boats in the harbor while we enjoyed the super fresh grilled snapper. It was a perfect, relaxed lunch spot.
Sebastian’s Restaurant
For a memorable sunset dinner, find a table at the edge of the dock at Sebastian’s. Start with the tuna trio appetizer, then try the barracuda with trout caviar. Sebastian’s nicely balances gourmet cooking with a genuine Caribbean feel. You can hear the waves lapping against the pilings, enjoy fresh cocktails, and soak in the background music. It’s a place that makes every meal feel like a celebration.
This was our favorite sunset spot. Michael and I shared a bottle of wine while the kids chased small crabs near the dock. It felt magical.
Rum Runners
Rum Runners, located at Captain Don’s Habitat, offers a classic, perfect dining experience. It’s exactly what you want after a day of exploring: refreshing drinks, wide sea views, and satisfying food. It’s laid-back, affordable, and a truly essential Bonairean stop. The constant breeze and cinematic sunsets here are wonderful. You can easily spend hours here, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and delicious seafood. Owner and chef Floris van Loo is a true champion of Caribbean cuisine.
This was our go-to for casual dinners. The kids loved their non-alcoholic “mocktails,” and I always ordered the catch of the day. It felt so unplugged and authentic.
La Balandra
If you seek the most beautiful dining setting on the island, La Balandra is it. Designed to resemble the bow of a Spanish galleon, it juts out over the turquoise sea, creating a floating dream. The views are unparalleled, with sunlight sparkling on the water during the day and moonlight dancing on the waves at night. The food lives up to the setting, featuring fresh seafood, Caribbean-style risottos, tenderloin, and delicious desserts. It’s an ideal place to mark a special moment.
We chose La Balandra for our last night. I couldn’t get over how stunning it looked, especially as the sun went down. Even Ethan was quiet, just mesmerized by the view and the gentle sway of the structure.
Innovative and Mediterranean Flavors
At Sea
At Sea was the restaurant that first put Bonaire on the global food map, earning number one in the region back in 2013. Housed in a century-old building, it’s where the island’s culinary creativity shines. The flavors are bold yet balanced, drawing from Dutch and Caribbean influences. The “surprise menus” are highly recommended—they offer a progressive culinary story. The service is warm, the wine pairings are thoughtful, and the atmosphere is upscale yet inviting.
Michael was very impressed with the inventive tasting menu. Lily enjoyed trying a few bites of his less adventurous dishes, and it was fun to see her curiosity sparked.
Bubbles
Bubbles is one of the newer spots and offers a chic, playful vibe with delightful surprises. It’s both a cocktail bar and a restaurant, perfect for late dinners or just drinks. The small plates change seasonally, and the mixologist creates drinks that are like works of art. You might find tuna tataki with citrus foam one night, or short ribs with tamarind glaze the next. There’s an energetic, almost metropolitan feel to the place, representing the island’s evolving dining scene.
We stopped by Bubbles for a happy hour drink after a day exploring. The cocktails were fantastic, and the small bites were perfect for a lighter evening snack. It felt very “grown-up” but still welcoming.
Ingridiënts
Nestled at the oceanfront edge of , Ingridiënts is a masterclass in elegant Mediterranean-Caribbean fusion. The name highlights its focus on high-quality ingredients and pure flavors. You’ll find dishes like Hong Kong-style seabass and salt-crusted dorade. The wine list is expertly curated, and the view is simply endless blue sea. Dining here feels like slipping into a slower, more appreciative rhythm, where every detail and every bite is savored.
Sitting at Ingridiënts felt so peaceful. I loved the minimalist style and the incredible freshness of the ingredients. It was a relaxing meal after a busy day with the kids.
