Dining experiences near Aruba’s resort areas

As I explore Aruba, my focus is on experiencing the local flavors, especially those easily accessible from the main resort areas. While I didn’t have a car on this trip, I made sure to find places within walking distance of where I was staying, aiming for a mix of casual bites and more substantial meals. I find that many of the most enjoyable travel experiences, especially culinary ones, come from simple discoveries right around the corner.

Beachside Bites

Near the resort strip, I discovered a few casual spots perfect for a relaxed meal. Scott’s Brats, located right on the beach near the Hyatt, offers a simple menu with drinks, wraps, and sandwiches. It’s a convenient stop for a quick lunch, especially since the prices are quite reasonable for the area. I appreciated that there were easy options for my kids, even if they weren’t the healthiest choices. I found the service to be friendly, and the prime beachfront location made it a great spot to grab a bite without venturing far.

Just a short walk from Scott’s Brats is Eduardo’s Beach Shack. This spot also boasts friendly service and offers food that leans towards healthier options. I really enjoyed their acai bowls, and the fresh fruit smoothies were a hit with everyone. It felt like a great spot to refuel with something refreshing after spending time by the water.

Mid-Range Meals

For a more relaxed dining experience with a view, I sought out Pelican’s Nest. It’s situated at the far end of a pier, offering stunning sunset vistas. While the setting is undeniably picturesque, and I would recommend it for a drink or appetizers to enjoy the scenery, my own dining experience with the main courses and service wasn’t as positive. The location is serene, but it’s wise to manage expectations regarding the food and service quality. If you plan to visit during sunset, making a reservation is likely a good idea to secure a desirable table.

Smokey Joe’s presented a nice balance of being casual, close to the resorts, and offering tasty food. The menu had a good variety, including shrimp, fish, and ribs, making it easy for everyone to find something appealing. I found the coconut shrimp and grilled shrimp to be particularly enjoyable, and the rice and beans were a good accompaniment. The service was prompt and friendly, and the entree prices were within a reasonable range for Aruba, making it a solid option for a satisfying meal.

Something Special

Across the street from the Radisson, I found Gianni’s Ristorante Italiano. This Italian restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating and provided some of the best food and service I encountered. They were very accommodating and seemed willing to create dishes based on available ingredients. The seafood pasta dishes were particularly delicious. However, the main drawback was the price; even basic pasta dishes started around $20, and specials could easily climb to $40. It’s a wonderful place for a meal, but it’s important to be mindful of the cost and perhaps confirm prices for specials beforehand.

After dinner at Gianni’s, I stopped at Gelatissimo next door for dessert. The gelato was delicious and creamy, and the prices were very reasonable, with a single scoop costing around $3. It was a perfect sweet treat, although the melted consistency when walking back to the resort was a minor challenge.

Convenient Options

For ultimate convenience, I visited The Palms Restaurant at the Hyatt Regency Aruba for brunch. While another option, Ruinas del Mar, offered a high-priced Sunday brunch, The Palms provided a more budget-friendly alternative. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating, and the lunch options were priced around $15 on average. While the food was adequate, it was rather bland, and I wouldn’t have returned for a second meal, even given its convenient location. It served its purpose for a quick, easy meal without needing to go far.

Exploring Aruba’s Tastes

What are some of the most accessible dining options near the main hotel areas?

When staying in the main resort areas of Aruba, particularly along the popular beaches, several dining spots are within easy walking distance. Casual beach shacks and eateries like Scott’s Brats and Eduardo’s Beach Shack offer quick and relatively affordable meals, often featuring familiar items like sandwiches or fresh smoothies. These places are ideal for a relaxed lunch without needing transportation. For a slightly more upscale experience that’s still conveniently located, restaurants like Gianni’s Ristorante Italiano, situated across from major hotels, provide a sit-down atmosphere with a broader menu, though prices can be higher. Smokey Joe’s also falls into a good mid-range category, offering a varied menu that’s easy to reach from the resorts.

I always find that sticking to areas with concentrated tourist infrastructure, like the strip where many hotels are located, greatly simplifies meal planning when you don’t have a car. Planning meals around what’s within a comfortable walk helps ensure you can enjoy the local cuisine without the hassle of travel logistics. Looking for well-reviewed spots near your accommodation often yields great results, from quick snacks to more formal dinners.

Are there good dessert spots near the high-rise hotels?

Yes, there are definitely sweet options available close to the main hotel zone. Gelatissimo, located next to Gianni’s Ristorante Italiano, is a prime example. It offers a variety of gelato flavors perfect for a post-dinner treat or an afternoon pick-me-up. The prices are generally quite accessible for a scoop or two. While the primary action for dining is often concentrated along the main strip or within hotel grounds, places like this are strategically placed to be easily found by visitors staying in the nearby hotels. I’ve found that the walkability of the area makes it easy to discover these dessert havens.

Sometimes, the best way to find a good dessert place is to simply look for popular spots that are adjacent to popular restaurants or shopping areas, as they often cater to the same foot traffic. The proximity of Gelatissimo to Gianni’s is a good indicator of this strategy working well.

What should visitors know about dining on a budget in Aruba?

Dining on a budget in Aruba, especially near the popular resort areas, requires a bit of mindful selection. While some restaurants can be quite pricey, more casual eateries and beach shacks often offer more economical choices. Scott’s Brats, for instance, provides a cost-effective lunch option right on the beach. Similarly, beach shacks like Eduardo’s often have affordable smoothies and bowls. Keep an eye on daily specials, and don’t hesitate to ask about pricing, especially for seafood or custom dishes, as costs can add up quickly at more upscale establishments like Gianni’s. Exploring local markets or smaller, non-beachfront eateries can also reveal better value.

I’ve learned that even in tourist-heavy areas, there are often pockets of more affordable dining if you look for them. Sometimes, the simplest menus or the most casual settings can provide the best value. Choosing places that focus on a few items done well, rather than extensive, high-end menus, is often a good strategy for managing costs while still enjoying good food. Walking a block or two away from the absolute prime beachfront can also sometimes lead to more budget-friendly finds.

When visiting Aruba, focus on exploring the diverse culinary landscape within walking distance of your accommodation. You’ll find a range of options to suit different tastes and budgets, from casual beachside snacks to more formal dining experiences.
