Stay in the Maldives’ First Underwater Villa

The Maldives offers more than just stunning beaches and consistently pleasant weather. Beneath the turquoise surface lies a spectacular world of marine life. It’s common to see manta rays, black-tipped reef sharks, and shimmering needlefish gliding through the water around the islands. For a truly unique experience, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island has been at the forefront, even featuring one of the world’s first underwater villas, The Muraka, offering an unparalleled view from its bathrooms.

Island Paradise Experiences

Discovering Natural Beauty

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is a place where natural beauty takes center stage. Spanning two large islands, the resort boasts vast stretches of golden sand bordered by a lagoon that shimmers in brilliant shades of blue. The abundant wildlife is a constant delight. You might spot the resort’s resident heron, George, enjoying a sunbed, or tiny crabs scurrying across the stilts of water villas.

As night falls, the bridge connecting the two islands comes alive with colorful lights, illuminating the water and attracting fish and manta rays for a nocturnal spectacle. Similarly, the over-water restaurants, Sunset Grill and Mandhoo, use subtle lighting that allows you to observe sharks and fish as you dine. While you can enjoy the marine life without getting wet, I highly recommend taking the plunge.

Island Atmospheres

Each of the two islands possesses a distinct character, though both are undeniably beautiful. The adults-only side promotes a more tranquil atmosphere, focusing on relaxation and wellness. In contrast, the main island is family-friendly, offering a wider array of activities. This includes a dive center where you can learn to scuba dive or join a snorkeling trip to see majestic whale sharks.

Even during peak season, you’ll find ample space to spread out and claim your own private patch of sand. The islands’ interiors are dense with lush jungle, featuring tall palm trees, a small banana plantation, and even a hydroponics garden. The accommodations blend traditional charm with modern comfort, featuring thatched roofs, dark walnut wood paneling, and sophisticated grey furnishings. I particularly enjoyed my stay in a water villa on the adults-only island, overlooking a calm, shallow lagoon.

The villa’s outdoor patio is perfect for watching breathtaking sunsets, complete with sunbeds, chairs, a table, and a small plunge pool. It’s an ideal spot to relax after a day exploring, perhaps with Michael after Lily and Ethan have tired themselves out playing on the beach.

The Unique Underwater Villa

An Architectural Marvel

Jutting out from the sea on the main island, The Muraka stands as a sleek, minimalist masterpiece. This two-story residence was the Maldives’ first underwater villa, and its design is truly impressive. The upper level features a luxurious two-bedroom apartment with marble floors, elegant decor, vibrant abstract art, a private gym, a large outdoor terrace, and an infinity pool.

A spiral staircase leads you 16 feet below sea level to the underwater bedroom. This space, adorned with stylish dark leather, feels like something out of a spy movie. Massive windows and a clear domed ceiling offer an uninterrupted 360-degree view of the marine world. You can simply lie in bed and watch a kaleidoscope of colorful fish swim and dance overhead.

A retractable blind can be used if the sun’s glare becomes too intense or if you desire a moment of privacy from your fishy neighbors. The underwater bathroom is equally spectacular, with floor-to-ceiling windows that allow you to marvel at the dazzling marine life while you shower. There’s also a small living area, providing multiple viewpoints into your private underwater aquarium.

Everywhere you look, the ocean is alive with activity. It’s a place where the view from the toilet is one of the most memorable aspects of your holiday. It’s an experience that truly makes you feel a world away, even from moments of necessity.

What are the best features of The Muraka?

The Muraka’s standout feature is undoubtedly its underwater bedroom, offering an unparalleled, immersive experience with marine life. The design seamlessly blends luxury accommodation with direct access to the ocean’s wonders.

Beyond the underwater suite, the villa boasts a sophisticated upper level with expansive living spaces, a private gym, and a generous outdoor terrace with an infinity pool, providing a complete luxurious retreat.

Diving into Culinary Delights

Dining with Ocean Views

When it comes to dining, the resort offers an abundance of choices. Atoll Market on the main island serves a generous breakfast spread, complete with a sushi counter and a live noodle station. I particularly enjoyed the coconut pancakes and the banana bread.

For a more refined experience, Vilu, located on the adults-only island, presents a pared-down menu in a beautiful seaside setting. The grilled seafood at Sunset Grill, with sharks swimming nearby, was a highlight of my meals. Mandhoo, focusing on healthy cuisine, offered perfectly seared scallops with celeriac puree.

Ufaa by Jereme Leung, a creative Chinese restaurant by the beach, was another favorite. Its playful take on Cantonese dishes, especially the dumplings with black garlic, showcased the freshness of the seafood beautifully. For an unforgettable dining experience, Ithaa, the resort’s intimate all-glass underwater restaurant with only 14 seats, is a must-visit.

Can you dine underwater?

Yes, Ithaa is a unique all-glass underwater restaurant where you can enjoy meals surrounded by marine life, offering a truly spectacular dining ambiance.

Watching black-tipped sharks and schools of fish glide above while enjoying breakfast pastries and eggs benedict royale was a mesmerizing start to the day, an experience Lily would have adored.

A Paradise Verdict

Unforgettable Island Stays

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is a remarkable destination, excelling in both its visual appeal and the unique experiences it offers. It truly is a paradise for nature lovers, with island walks that can feel like stepping into a vibrant, animated world.

For those looking for a truly splurge-worthy experience, The Muraka offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sleep beneath the waves. Watching fish swim by from your bed or while showering is an incredible, surreal moment. This villa delivers a celebrity-like feeling, allowing you to live out your own “Finding Nemo” adventure.

The resort provides a range of activities for after you’ve had your fill of marine life. You can enjoy tennis courts, a 24-hour fitness center, beach volleyball, yoga classes, infinity pools, and a watersports center. The over-water spa is also a wonderful place to unwind with a massage or facial.

As a guest of Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, I found the combination of natural beauty and unique accommodations to be truly outstanding. If you’re considering a trip to the Maldives, perhaps for a special occasion in 2026, this resort offers an unforgettable blend of luxury and the wonders of the ocean. It’s a place that will create lasting memories for you and your family.
