Traveling to the Maldives doesn’t always mean a lengthy seaplane journey. For those who prefer a quicker arrival or want to manage costs, many fantastic resorts are just a speedboat ride away from Malé. With more direct flights becoming available, it’s an ideal time to consider a tropical escape. After a recent trip, I discovered some incredible speedboat-accessible options that offer amazing experiences without the extra transfer time.
Fun Resorts by Speedboat
Opting for a speedboat transfer really streamlined our arrival. It felt like we were hitting the beach and the resort amenities much sooner, which was perfect for getting our vacation started right away. The convenience is a major plus, especially when you have the kids eager to get in the water.
Hilton Amingiri Island
Located on a purpose-built island in North Malé Atoll, the Hilton Amingiri is about a 20-minute speedboat ride from the capital. What struck me immediately was how well the resort integrated with nature. Lush greenery lines the pathways and even the overwater boardwalks, creating a feeling of natural abundance where geckos and local birds thrive.
Marine conservation is a clear focus here. You can dive just meters from the shore and be surrounded by vibrant coral and schools of tropical fish. They’ve even incorporated repurposed items like an old bicycle as artificial reefs, which is quite innovative. The resort embraces innovation above the waves too, with a unique mixology lab offering cocktail masterclasses and bespoke drink creations in oak barrels.
The dining options feel spacious and inviting. Aura, the beachside bar, lets you dine with your feet in the sand, while Habitat provides a relaxed all-day dining experience. Origin serves sustainable seafood with stunning sea views. Our villa offered plenty of space, and the private pools were a huge hit with Lily and Ethan. For younger guests, there’s an impressively large kids’ club, and teens have their own dedicated zone, Re:Fuel, where they can enjoy mocktails and sunset views.
What activities are there for kids?
Hilton Amingiri boasts one of the largest kids’ clubs in the Maldives, offering a wide range of supervised activities and entertainment. Teens have their own special area, Re:Fuel, where they can relax and socialize.
This resort offers a fantastic blend of family fun and sophisticated relaxation. The thoughtful design and commitment to nature make it a standout choice for a convenient and enjoyable Maldivian holiday.
Anantara Veli Resort
A 35-minute speedboat journey brings you to Anantara Veli, an adult-only resort that reopened after a significant renovation in late 2022. This update included new beach pool villas and a revitalized spa with a beautiful hammam. The dining venues also received major makeovers, with a strong emphasis on quality regional cuisine.
Cumin, a new addition, showcases Indian Ocean dishes, while Origami offers fantastic Japanese fare, including robatayaki. The oceanfront Dhoni Bar has also been refreshed. Although it’s an adult-only resort, Anantara Veli is connected to the family-friendly Anantara Dhigu via a short shuttle boat, allowing Veli guests access to Dhigu’s facilities and restaurants at no extra charge. This provides excellent flexibility for your vacation choices.
At Anantara Dhigu, you can explore dining options like Sea.Fire.Salt for grilled meats and fish or Aqua for Italian specialties. For special occasions, their Dining by Design experience offers a private chef, butler, and sommelier. While Anantara Veli isn’t the quietest due to nearby local island life and water sports traffic, it maintains a sense of seclusion and offers a vast array of activities.
Can couples visit family resorts?
Yes, Anantara Veli is an adult-only sanctuary, providing a tranquil escape. However, its connection to Anantara Dhigu via a short boat ride means couples can easily access a wider variety of dining and recreational opportunities if they wish.
For the adventurous, Anantara Dhigu is home to the Maldives’ first PADI freediving center, offering lessons and the chance to swim with gentle nurse sharks. We found the variety of activities, from tennis and badminton to cooking classes and pétanque, to be excellent. Audley Travel offers a 12-night package including 10 nights here, starting from £6,500 per person.
Oblu Xperience Ailafushi
Opening in June 2022, brings a refreshingly fun vibe to the Maldives. A distinctive feature is the large waterslide that plunges guests directly into the lagoon. The resort aims to make the Maldives more accessible, and this is certainly true with its 15-minute speedboat transfer from Malé. Rates start around £2,000 for seven nights on an all-inclusive basis.
The Fushi Plan is the only option, covering most alcohol, including spirits, beer, and house wine. Additional charges apply only for dining at two specialty restaurants: The Copper Pot Food Truck and the underwater restaurant, Only Blu. Even the on-site shop offers reasonably priced wine. The focus here is definitely on enjoyment, with poolside DJ sets and banana boat rides.
There’s no butler service; check-in is at a large, hotel-style reception, and you make your way to your accommodation independently. My water villa was compact but well-designed, and conveniently close to the resort’s center. The lively X360 Bar is located in my building, perfect for those who enjoy a good atmosphere.
Is the resort all-inclusive?
Yes, operates exclusively on an all-inclusive basis, known as the Fushi Plan. This covers most food and drinks, including a wide selection of alcoholic beverages.
For quieter moments, there are plenty of other options across the 268 rooms and villas. To keep costs down and enhance offerings, certain luxuries like private pools and in-villa baths have been omitted. The Element X buffet restaurant is a highlight, offering an extensive selection of dishes and self-serve drinks, plus a visually appealing refrigerated dessert room. My family loved the variety here, making meal times easy and fun even with younger children.
The resort is connected by a boardwalk to its sister property, Oblu Select Lobigili. While Lobigili guests can use Ailafushi’s facilities, Ailafushi guests need to pay extra for dining at Lobigili. My final evening was spent at Only Blu, the Maldives’ largest underwater restaurant, enjoying octopus carpaccio while watching fish glide by. It made me realize that not having a bathtub in the villa was a small trade-off for such an incredible dining experience.
