Maldives Landaa Giraavaru: See Manta Rays

The Maldives is often painted as a destination solely for honeymooners, a place of romantic escapes and overwater bungalows. While it certainly delivers on that, our recent trip with the kids revealed a different, equally compelling side to these idyllic islands. Beyond the breathtaking turquoise waters and powdery white sands, we discovered a surprisingly family-friendly environment with unique experiences that engaged both our seven-year-old, Lily, and our four-year-old, Ethan, in ways we hadn’t anticipated. For us, coming from Boston, the journey itself was part of the adventure, with a seaplane offering unparalleled views of the scattered atolls, a truly unforgettable start to our Maldivian exploration in 2026.

Exploring Baa Atoll

Our journey took us to the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its incredible marine life. This area feels a world away from the usual tourist hubs, offering a sense of remoteness and pristine natural beauty. It’s here that is situated, a resort that has embraced its extraordinary location with a strong focus on conservation and interactive guest experiences. It’s a place that invites you to not just relax, but to learn and connect with the surrounding environment.

Getting to the resort itself is an experience. From the main Velana International Airport in Malé, a seaplane transfer is required, a 45-minute flight that is as much a part of the holiday as your stay. The aerial views are stunning, showcasing the intricate patterns of reefs and the vibrant blues of the ocean. The resort provides a comfortable lounge area at the seaplane terminal, a welcome spot to relax and prepare for the onward journey, especially after a long flight with children.

Resort Design and Accommodation

Landaa Giraavaru is designed with traditional Maldivian architecture in mind, featuring charming thatched roofs. However, it possesses a lusher, more jungle-like feel compared to some other resorts. The island is home to 103 villas, offering a range of luxurious options for families.

The water villas have been recently renovated, boasting high ceilings and stylish interiors, with direct access to the ocean. For families who prefer to be closer to the sand, the beach villas offer even more space, featuring larger private pools and their own pathways leading directly to the beach. We found our beach villa to be incredibly spacious, with a generous sleeping area, a well-appointed bathroom including an outdoor shower, and ample lounging space both inside and out by our private pool. The attention to detail in the villa’s amenities, down to providing aftersun lotion, was a thoughtful touch.

One of the standout features of our villa was the sheer abundance of comfortable spots to relax. From the loungers by the pool and the daybeds scattered around the outdoor space to a hammock on the balcony, there were plenty of places to unwind with a book. This allowed for individual relaxation time, even while traveling with young children.

Dining Options

The resort offers a diverse culinary landscape with four distinct restaurants, ensuring there’s something to please every palate, even picky eaters like Lily. Fuego Grill, located right on the beach, is perfect for seafood lovers. Al Barakat offers Middle Eastern-inspired cuisine, while Blu serves Italian dishes – their pizza was a hit with the kids. Cafe Landaa provides a relaxed atmosphere for breakfast, featuring an extensive buffet, and also serves delicious poke bowls for lunch.

Snacks and lighter fare are available at the poolside bars, and the Seabar, perched above the water, is an ideal spot for an evening drink while keeping an eye out for passing reef sharks. The variety ensures that dining remains an exciting part of the daily experience, rather than a chore, especially when you’re looking for options that cater to different age groups and tastes. Having these varied choices made meal times enjoyable for the whole family.

Marine Discovery and Conservation

A significant draw of Landaa Giraavaru is its commitment to marine conservation, centered around its Marine Discovery Centre. This isn’t just an educational facility; it’s an active hub for research and rehabilitation. For families, this offers a unique opportunity to learn about and engage with the ocean’s delicate ecosystem.

The resort actively participates in manta ray research and turtle rehabilitation programs. Guests have the chance to join a “Manta on Call” program, where you’ll be alerted if manta rays are spotted nearby, allowing for an excursion to see these magnificent creatures up close. While younger children might not be able to participate directly due to water depth and conditions, the center itself is fascinating. We spent time observing rescued turtles, each with a story of recovery from injuries sustained in ghost nets, a poignant reminder of the impact of human activity on marine life.

The Reefscapers coral propagation project is also based here, and guests can even get involved by planting coral fragments onto frames, helping to restore reefs damaged by bleaching. The fish breeding program is another initiative aimed at supporting local communities and providing educational insights into marine life. It’s inspiring to see a resort dedicate such resources to environmental stewardship. The chance to learn about these efforts provides a valuable educational component to the holiday, especially for curious children eager to understand the world around them.

Activities for All Ages

Landaa Giraavaru excels in providing a wide array of activities that cater to families and younger travelers. Beyond the usual resort offerings like swimming pools and watersports, there’s a strong emphasis on engaging children with the natural environment and local culture.

The resort has a kids’ club that offers a variety of supervised activities, from coral reef building and sand sculpting to nature walks and craft sessions. For Ethan and Lily, the daily fruit bat safari, spotting these creatures during their evening flights, became a particular highlight. Even the transport around the island is family-friendly, with bicycles available in various sizes, including those with stabilizers for younger riders.

A unique offering is the “Passport to Adventure” booklet, designed for children aged four to 12. This interactive guide encourages exploration of the resort and its surroundings through a series of challenges and puzzles. Completing tasks earns stamps, culminating in rewards like toys or ice cream sundaes. It’s a clever way to keep children engaged and learning about the local marine life, culture, and language, fostering a sense of curiosity and discovery.

The resort mascot, Kaku the hermit crab, adds a whimsical touch, leaving postcards in the villas each night with updates and stories, a delightful ritual that our children looked forward to. These small touches enhance the overall family experience and make the children feel particularly special. Even simple pleasures, like a bubble bath decorated with flower petals and served with mango juice and fruit, provided moments of pure joy for Lily.

What are the best family activities?

The resort offers a dedicated kids’ club with a range of activities like coral reef building, sand sculpting, and island walks. For a more adventurous family outing, consider the spinner dolphin cruise or a picnic on a deserted sandbank. Younger children can enjoy the introductory diving program, Bubblemaker (ages 8+), or snorkeling directly from the beach with provided life jackets.

Ethan and Lily were particularly excited about the fruit bat safaris and the interactive Passport to Adventure booklet, which encourages exploration and learning through fun challenges. For older children, the possibility of snorkeling with turtles or even a personal submarine trip offers unique underwater experiences. The opportunity to learn about marine conservation efforts directly at the Marine Discovery Centre is also a highly recommended activity for the entire family.

Exploring Underwater Worlds

The Maldives is synonymous with incredible snorkeling and diving, and Landaa Giraavaru is no exception. You can easily snorkel right off the beach, exploring vibrant coral frames teeming with marine life. A fish identification chart provided in the villas is a helpful tool for recognizing the diverse species you encounter.

For those seeking more structured marine excursions, the resort organizes various trips. A turtle safari proved to be a highlight for us. Guided by a marine biologist, we ventured out to spot these gentle creatures in their natural habitat. Witnessing the turtles glide through the deep blue waters alongside the corals was a breathtaking moment. The shallows were alive with schools of blue tangs and butterflyfish weaving through the coral, creating a kaleidoscope of color.

For a truly unique perspective, the Deepflight personal submarine offers an hour-long journey into the underwater world for two guests and a pilot, providing an extraordinary experience without getting wet. This is a fantastic option for those who might not be strong swimmers or are looking for a different way to explore the ocean’s depths, though it is an additional splurge and best suited for older children or adults. Even the jungle walk, winding through the island’s interior past orchids and the resort’s vegetable garden, offers a refreshing change of pace and a different kind of natural exploration.

Ayurveda and Wellness

The resort also houses a dedicated Spa and Ayurvedic Centre, offering a unique dimension to the Maldivian experience. While the full Ayurvedic retreats might be more suited for adults, the center offers consultations to help guests understand their individual dosha type. This can lead to personalized health and diet recommendations, offering a glimpse into this ancient wellness practice.

The restaurant menus are helpfully marked with symbols indicating dishes aligned with the different doshas, allowing guests to make informed choices based on their consultation. Even if you have little prior knowledge of Ayurveda, it’s an accessible way to learn more about mindful eating and holistic well-being. The spa itself offers a range of relaxing massages and facial treatments, including options specifically for teens, providing a tranquil escape.

Culinary Delights

The food at Landaa Giraavaru is a significant part of the overall experience, with an emphasis on quality and variety, which is impressive given its remote location. The breakfast buffet is extensive, featuring international offerings alongside Chinese, Maldivian, and Indian stations, with live cooking for eggs and pancakes. We were even able to enjoy dim sum one morning as part of the buffet.

For a more intimate breakfast, Blu offers a decadent French toast option. Lunch can be lighter at Cafe Landaa with their popular poke bowls, or you can enjoy fresh fish right by the water at Fuego Grill. Dinner at Al Barakat, the Middle Eastern restaurant, is a must-try, especially the weekly Sultan meze set menu. This is a grand affair, consisting of numerous small dishes served over several courses, making for a memorable and filling dining experience. For us, it was a delightful way to try many different flavors and textures, and the children found plenty of familiar options too.

It’s worth noting that prices in the Maldives, especially at luxury resorts, reflect their island location and services. The Four Seasons resorts are not all-inclusive, so budgeting for dining and drinks is important. However, keep an eye out for special offers, which sometimes include kids-eat-free packages or discounts. Also, remember that bringing your own alcohol into the Maldives is prohibited.

Our Verdict on Landaa Giraavaru

While the Maldives might have a reputation for romance, Landaa Giraavaru proves it’s an exceptional destination for families too. For those with older children, this resort offers a truly special experience. The opportunity to stay within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the chance to encounter manta rays are incredibly compelling draws. The strong focus on marine conservation is not only educational for both parents and children but also rewarding, knowing that the resort is actively contributing to the protection of this beautiful part of the world.

The seaplane journey itself is an exhilarating prelude to the island’s magic, offering aerial vistas of turquoise waters and coral reefs that are simply unparalleled. Landaa Giraavaru possesses a distinct character, shaped by its jungle-like setting, its commitment to Ayurveda, and its immersive marine activities, setting it apart even from its sister resort. While it represents a significant investment, the unique experiences and unforgettable memories created make it a worthwhile destination for a family adventure in 2026 and beyond.

We found the blend of luxurious comfort, engaging activities, and a deep connection to the natural environment made our visit to Landaa Giraavaru a truly unforgettable family holiday. It’s a place that stays with you long after you’ve departed those pristine shores.
