Stepping onto the island felt like entering a postcard, the kind where the blues of the ocean and sky blend seamlessly. Even before reaching our villa, the resort’s layout unfolded like a beautifully designed map, hinting at the diverse experiences awaiting us. The organization into distinct zones made exploring intuitive, from the central hub of the welcome pavilion to the tranquil spa area and the lively southern quarter buzzing with water sports and dining.
Island Exploration Zones
Central Welcome and Dining
The heart of the resort is anchored by the welcome pavilion, leading us to the Aailaa restaurant and the adjacent Horizon bar. This area also houses the main swimming pool, which is open to all guests. It’s a focal point, especially with the Italian restaurant, Fiamma, right on its edge. For quieter moments, there’s a reception room and a library complete with workstations and a small souvenir shop. A photography studio is also conveniently located here, perfect for capturing memories.
Northern Tranquility and Fitness
Venturing north, we found a more serene section dedicated to wellness. The Spa by JW is a significant draw, offering a dedicated space for rejuvenation. Adjacent to it is an outdoor yoga area, where I found myself drawn to the morning sessions. For those who prefer a more structured workout, an enclosed fitness room is also available. This zone also provides access to a pontoon, the gateway to the picturesque stilt villas.
Southern Activities and Culinary Delights
The southern part of the island is where much of the action unfolds. It’s home to a second pool, known as Pool 18, which offers a different ambiance. This area is a culinary hub, boasting several restaurants and bars, including Rum Baan, Wabi Sabi, Shio, Kaashi, and Hashi. Families will appreciate the dedicated Kids Club, while adults can retreat to Lounge 18. Crucially for adventure seekers, the diving and water sports center is also located here.
Exceptional Service and Attentions
Attentive Staff Throughout
From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel incredibly welcomed. Our butler was a constant source of thoughtful service, anticipating needs before we even voiced them. The housekeeping team also ensured our villa was immaculate, frequently adding small touches that brightened our days. Over our five-day stay, the consistent attentiveness created a truly pampered experience.
Celebrating Special Moments
The resort excelled at acknowledging special occasions. We had mentioned our upcoming 11th wedding anniversary, and they went above and beyond to make it memorable. These personal touches, woven into the fabric of our stay, elevated the experience significantly and made us feel truly valued.
Diverse Dining Experiences
Aailaa Restaurant All Day
Breakfast at Aailaa was a daily ritual, enjoyed on a beautiful terrace with stunning views of the overwater villas and the vibrant marine life below. The buffet offered a wide array, from international favorites to local Maldivian specialties. Evenings here offered a simpler, yet delicious, menu in a cozy atmosphere, with attentive staff ensuring everything was perfect. For a more intimate dining experience, their wine room provides a spectacular setting.
Hashi Japanese Delights
Overlooking the water, Hashi presented an exquisite menu of Japanese delicacies. The presentation was as artful as the flavors were refined, making for a memorable meal. We savored each delicate bite, appreciating the fresh ingredients and skillful preparation.
Shio – Grilled Perfection
For meat and fish lovers, Shio proved to be a highlight. We opted for a sharing platter that was an absolute treat, showcasing perfectly grilled selections. The quality and taste were outstanding, offering a robust counterpoint to some of the lighter options available on the island.
Horizon Bar Sunset Views
Evenings at the Horizon bar were magical. Relaxing in comfortable “swing” chairs, we enjoyed local cocktails and shisha while watching the sky transform with a spectacular sunset. On one particularly memorable evening, a DJ added a celebratory soundtrack to the moment, capping off the day perfectly.
Other Culinary Adventures
The island offers a spectrum of tastes. Kaashi, a Thai restaurant perched among the trees, provided breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and Pool 18. Nearby, the Rum Baan bar offered a casual spot to unwind. Fiamma, by the main pool, tempted us with authentic Italian dishes and wood-fired pizzas. For those seeking a Japanese-inspired ambiance beyond Hashi, Wabi Sabi provided another refined bar experience.
Romantic Dining Options
Beachfront Dinners
The resort can arrange a truly romantic dinner for two directly on the beach. Imagine candles flickering in the sand, the gentle sound of waves, and a private setting perfect for any special occasion. It’s an experience crafted for maximum romance and unforgettable memories, often timed to coincide with a stunning sunset.
In-Villa Dining Convenience
When the mood strikes, or you simply prefer the privacy of your villa, in-house dining is available around the clock. This flexibility ensures you can enjoy a meal whenever hunger calls, day or night, without ever having to leave your personal sanctuary.
Refreshing Pool Experiences
Main Pool Relaxation
The main resort pool is generously sized, featuring ample deckchairs and shaded cabanas. It’s ideally situated near the Italian restaurant and proved to be a wonderful spot to relax, especially in the late afternoon light, offering lovely sunset views.
Pool 18 Adults’ Retreat
Pool 18, suspended and reserved for guests over 18, offered a unique perspective. It was fascinating to gaze down at the vibrant underwater world, tracking schools of fish and even small sharks swimming below. The waterfront ledge here is a perfect perch for quiet contemplation, soaking in the expansive ocean vistas.
Staff and Sun Protection
Throughout our pool visits, staff were always nearby, offering complimentary bottles of iced water, a thoughtful touch given the strong Maldivian sun. It’s a reminder that sun protection is essential here, and the resort does provide access to medical assistance if needed.
Wellness and Fitness Facilities
Ocean-View Gymnasium
The fitness room offers an invigorating workout environment with its stunning sea view. It’s quite motivational to exercise while watching sharks glide past the bay window. The calm atmosphere here is conducive to a focused and peaceful training session.
Energizing Yoga Sessions
Participating in the morning yoga sessions was a highlight. Held outdoors, the sessions began with serene music and singing, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The instructor ensured everyone felt comfortable, leading us through a practice that felt both energizing and incredibly relaxing as the day began.
Rejuvenating Spa Services
While we didn’t personally use the spa facilities, we noted its comprehensive offerings. It features six treatment rooms and provides a range of services, including manicures, pedicures, and hammam treatments, promising deep relaxation and rejuvenation.
Evening Outdoor Yoga
An evening yoga session on an outdoor terrace offered a different kind of enchantment. After a long day, this practice provided a wonderful opportunity to unwind and reconnect. The tranquil setting perfectly complemented the calming effects of the yoga itself.
Water Sports and Adventures
Diving and Water Sports Center
The diving and water sports center is your gateway to experiencing the incredible marine environment. They provide complimentary fins and snorkels for exploring the reefs. The staff here are knowledgeable and can arrange a variety of activities, from scuba diving and catamaran sailing to kayaking, paddleboarding, and dolphin-watching cruises.
Snorkeling Exploration
We took advantage of the free snorkeling gear regularly. The house reef is easily accessible and teeming with marine life, making it simple to spend hours exploring the underwater world right from the shore or our villa’s deck. It’s a fantastic way to connect with the ocean’s beauty.
Exceptional Kids Club
Family by JW Overview
The Kids Club, known as Family by JW – Little Griffins, is truly exceptional. It stands out for its comprehensive facilities, generous space, and well-thought-out programming. The team here is clearly dedicated to creating memorable experiences for children, making it a top-tier facility.
Engaging Activities and Themes
The activities are cleverly planned, often adapting to seasons and holidays. The children are educated about nature and sustainability, with decorations reflecting an underwater theme. This immersive approach makes learning fun and engaging for the younger guests.
Childcare Facilities
Children are welcomed from three years old, and notably, parents are not always required to be present, which is a rare and convenient feature. The club includes a changing room with napping facilities and a comfortable space for nursing mothers. The outdoor area is impressive, featuring a pool and a large pirate ship structure.
Child-Friendly Surprises
The staff even mentioned organizing movie nights with popcorn for the children on the pirate ship. At the end of our stay, our children received small gift bags with adorable stuffed animals, a heartwarming gesture that made them feel cherished and excited about their time on the island.
Adults-Only Retreat
Lounge 18 for Adults
Lounge 18 is an exclusive area for adults (18+), offering a sophisticated space to unwind. It includes a pool table, a cigar and shisha room, and a karaoke room, alongside various table games. We enjoyed having the space to ourselves for a game of pool during our visit.
Capture Your Memories
Complimentary Photo Session
We were offered a complimentary photo session at the beginning of our stay. While we had to book it in advance, it’s a wonderful opportunity to have professional photos taken against the stunning Maldivian backdrop. The resort team clearly understands the desire to capture these precious vacation moments.
Exploring the Island Amenities
Library and Reception Areas
The library offers a curated selection of books, providing a quiet escape for reading and reflection. Its integration with reception and other communal spaces makes it easily accessible for guests seeking a moment of calm or a quiet place to work.
Poolside Relaxation
The pools are more than just places to swim; they are designed as social and relaxing hubs. With attentive service and beautiful surroundings, spending time by the water is an essential part of the Maldivian experience, whether you’re enjoying a refreshing dip or simply soaking up the sun.
