It offers the beautiful beaches Cancun is known for, but with a more laid-back and genuine feel. If you’re looking for an escape, this island might be just the place.
Getting to Isla Mujeres
To reach Isla Mujeres, you’ll first need to fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN). It’s a major hub, making it a good place to find affordable flights, especially if you’re flexible with your travel dates. Many airlines offer direct service here, and sometimes deals pop up for under $300 roundtrip.
Once you’ve landed in Cancun, your journey to Isla Mujeres is straightforward. You’ll head to the ferry terminal at Puerto Juárez, which is about a 30 to 40-minute drive from the airport, depending on traffic. From there, you’ll catch a ferry to the island.
Transportation Options from Cancun Airport
There are a few ways to get from Cancun Airport to the Puerto Juárez ferry terminal. For the most budget-friendly option, take the ADO airport bus to downtown Cancun and then a taxi to Puerto Juárez. This should cost around $5 per person. If you prefer a more direct route and don’t mind spending more, a taxi directly from the airport to the ferry terminal will cost about $45 or more each way.
For groups traveling together, booking a private airport transfer service like USA Transfers ahead of time can be convenient. This usually costs between $85 to $90 roundtrip and ensures a driver meets you at the airport. It’s also a good idea to check if your accommodation on Isla Mujeres can help arrange transportation for you; sometimes this offers a small convenience fee but saves a lot of hassle.
The Ferry Ride
The UltraMar Ferry is the primary way to get to Isla Mujeres. You can bring luggage up to about 55 pounds, with some size restrictions.
There are also ferry routes departing from the Cancun Hotel Zone at Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol. These run mostly midday and are a bit more expensive, but they can be convenient if you’re staying in that area. For a more luxurious experience, chartering a private boat is also an option.

While Isla Mujeres might look small on a map, it’s best to have your own wheels to explore. Cars are not allowed on the island for tourists, and taxis can be hard to come by. The most popular and practical way to get around is by renting a golf cart. It’s a fun way to see the island, and even with a cart, it can take over 20 minutes to travel from one end to the other.

You can find golf cart rental companies right near the ferry terminal, making it easy to get one as soon as you arrive. Rates typically range from about $45 to $55 per day, but this can vary based on the size of the cart, the time of year, and how long you rent it for. To make sure you get a cart when you want one, it’s recommended to book in advance with companies like Ciro’s. Some rental places even offer delivery of the golf cart to your accommodation.
What to Do on Isla Mujeres
See the Sunrise at Punta Sur
Isla Mujeres holds the distinction of being the easternmost point of mainland Mexico, meaning you can witness the sunrise before anyone else in the country. Punta Sur, the southern tip of the island, is the place to be for this spectacular event.
Watching the sun ascend over the horizon, casting a glow over the rocky coastline and the sea, is a magical experience. Even if you’re not an early riser, the breathtaking views make the early start worthwhile. For me, experiencing this sunrise with Michael and the kids was a highlight; Lily kept pointing at the colors changing in the sky, and Ethan just watched, captivated.
History of Punta Sur
Punta Sur is also home to the historical remains of a temple dedicated to Ixchel, the Mayan moon goddess. It is from her that Isla Mujeres, the “Island of Women,” gets its name. Legend has it that when Spanish conquistadors arrived in the early 1500s, they found only female followers of Ixchel living on the island, with statues of the goddess scattered throughout.
Ixchel was revered as the patron of cycles governed by the moon, including fertility, harvests, and water. She also had sway over arts like weaving and painting, as well as healing. The park at Punta Sur features sculptures that depict Mayan culture and history, offering a walk through the past as you take in the stunning scenery.
Relax on the Beaches
Isla Mujeres boasts some truly beautiful beaches, with Playa Norte consistently ranked among the best in Mexico. Its warm, shallow, turquoise waters and soft, powdery white sand make it an ideal spot to unwind.
Nearby Playa Norte, you’ll find Playa El Cocal, which essentially merges with it on the northern tip. Playa Centro is another lovely beach on the west side, just off Playa Norte. If you’re seeking a more secluded spot, Bella Beach is a bit further inland and offers a quieter atmosphere away from the main crowds.
Beach Clubs and Amenities
Along the shores of Playa Norte, you’ll find several beach clubs offering amenities like reserved lounge chairs, food, and drinks. These can be a great way to spend a leisurely afternoon, enjoying the sun and sea with convenient service. We found a spot here where the kids could play safely in the shallow water while Michael and I relaxed with a cool drink.
Visit Isla Contoy National Park
For an island escape within an island, consider a trip to Isla Contoy. This uninhabited national park is about an hour’s boat ride from Isla Mujeres and has strict visitor limits, allowing only 200 people per day. This ensures a peaceful and pristine experience.
Isla Contoy is a haven for diverse flora and fauna, and its beaches are truly idyllic. Tours often include the boat ride, several hours on the island, lunch, and opportunities for snorkeling. From a scenic overlook, you can observe abundant vegetation, the dynamic coastline, and countless birds soaring overhead. Keep an eye out for iguanas and hermit crabs scurrying along the paths.
Wildlife Encounters on Isla Contoy
During our visit, we were fortunate to see park staff tending to baby sea turtles. They explained that they move the young turtles after hatching to protect them from predators and release them back into the ocean when conditions are safer. It was an amazing moment for Lily and Ethan to witness these tiny creatures.
The beach on Isla Contoy is exceptionally quiet and beautiful, with clear blue waters that are perfect for swimming. We even spotted a full-grown sea turtle swimming just offshore. It’s important to note that sunscreen is not allowed on Isla Contoy, even reef-safe types, to protect the ecosystem. It’s crucial to apply a good layer of sunblock before you leave for the island and consider wearing protective clothing like a hat and a long-sleeved shirt to prevent sunburn.
Go Snorkeling and Diving
Isla Mujeres is situated on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system, offering excellent opportunities for snorkeling and diving. Even if you’re not a professional diver, the reefs just off the coast provide a fantastic underwater experience.
Exploring the reef, you’ll see colorful coral formations, a variety of sea plants, and a multitude of vibrant fish. It’s a chance to see marine life up close. While we were there, we also heard about the MUSA (Museo Subacuatico de Arte), an underwater art museum with sculptures designed to promote marine life and draw attention to climate change. This is definitely on my list for a future visit.
Dine on Delicious Tacos
Isla Mujeres may be small, but it packs a punch when it comes to food, especially its tacos. You could easily spend your entire trip trying different taco spots and still not sample them all!
Must-Try Taco Spots
For excellent shrimp tacos, Lola Valentina on Avenida Miguel Hidalgo is a popular choice, and their fish tacos are also highly recommended. Many consider Los Tacos de Humo to serve some of the best fish tacos, if not the best tacos overall, on the island. Their fresh tortillas filled with tender fried fish, slaw, and pico de gallo are a culinary delight.
If you prefer red meat, Al Natural offers delicious tacos al pastor. The bright plastic salsa caddy with several homemade salsas is a good indication of the authentic flavors. For a memorable street food experience, check out the Taqueria al Chilango truck, which offers specialties like tripa tacos alongside more common options like al pastor and arrachera.
Drinks and Other Dining Options
For inventive drinks and frozen margaritas, Xantolo is a popular spot, though some suggest sticking to drinks there. Fish & Gin is another place worth checking out if you’re looking for something a bit different from the usual.
We also found that renting a chef through our Airbnb was a fantastic option. Victor and Geni at Casa Yáax provided incredible meals, from fresh fish tacos and ceviche to fajitas and huevos rancheros, all served with homemade salsa. Eating a wonderfully prepared meal at our “home” base after a day of exploring was a perfect way to cap off the evening.
Where to Stay on Isla Mujeres
You won’t find large chain hotels on Isla Mujeres. Instead, the island offers boutique hotels and a wealth of rental properties, particularly through platforms like Airbnb.
Rental Accommodations
Renting a seaside house can provide a more authentic island experience. There are numerous Airbnbs to suit different group sizes and budgets, from spacious villas like Marina Comodoro or the Tortuga Suite for those seeking a Caribbean villa feel, to more compact condos. The island’s size means you’re rarely far from an ocean view.
Our stay at Casa Yáax was ideal for a larger group, with its eight bedrooms, open-air design, infinity pool, and a bar area. The option to book transportation through our accommodation simplified our travel plans considerably. With its small size, renting a golf cart often becomes essential for exploring, and it’s worth considering this when choosing your accommodation location.
If you’re looking for a resort experience, is an all-inclusive option located on a small island connected by a boardwalk to Playa Norte. However, for a more local feel and better value, exploring house rentals is often the way to go. It’s a wonderful place for a family vacation in 2026, offering a slower pace and beautiful natural surroundings.
