Finally experiencing it for myself, I can confirm it lives up to the hype, offering a rich blend of relaxation and adventure that’s surprisingly accessible, even from the West Coast. Grand Cayman, the largest of the islands, provides a fantastic starting point for exploring what makes this Caribbean gem so special.
Unforgettable Beach Experiences
Seven Mile Beach Bliss
Our days often started with a walk along Seven Mile Beach. It’s exactly as advertised: miles of soft, pale sand meeting incredibly clear, calm water. The kids, Lily and Ethan, couldn’t get enough of it. Michael and I found it the perfect spot to unwind while keeping an eye on them splashing near the shore. The gentle waves make it incredibly safe for families, and you can find plenty of spots to just sit and soak in the view.
Beyond simply lounging, the watersports here are incredible. You can rent jet skis for a bit of a thrill, or try paddleboarding for a more serene glide across the surface. We saw people kiteboarding and windsurfing, adding to the dynamic energy of the beach. It’s easy to spend an entire day here, moving from swimming to exploring different stretches of sand.

Swimming with Gentle Giants
A definite highlight was our visit to the Cayman Turtle Centre. It’s a fantastic educational experience, not just for the kids but for us adults too. Seeing the sea turtles up close, from tiny hatchlings to impressive adults, was truly remarkable. The facility does great work in conservation, and it’s inspiring to learn about their efforts to boost wild populations.
The chance to swim in the Turtle Lagoon alongside these graceful creatures was something I’ll never forget. Lily was a little hesitant at first, but her curiosity won out, and seeing her beam as a turtle swam past was a special moment. Michael captured some amazing photos of the iridescent scales and gentle eyes.
Interacting at Stingray City
Stingray City is an absolute must-do. It feels a bit surreal at first, wading into shallow water where dozens of stingrays gather. Our guide was excellent, showing us exactly how to approach and interact with them. They are surprisingly soft and gentle, and our experience feeding them was both fun and a little awe-inspiring.
The kids were a mix of excited and a little nervous, but the guides create such a comfortable environment. After our stingray encounter, we often visited Starfish Point. It’s a lovely, tranquil spot where you can see starfish resting in the shallow waters. It’s a beautiful contrast to the liveliness of Stingray City and a great photo opportunity.

Discovering Island Caves
Venturing away from the coast, the Cayman Crystal Caves offered a completely different adventure. It’s amazing to think these formations exist right here in the middle of the island. The caves are filled with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, creating a truly otherworldly atmosphere. You can even spot bats hanging around in some areas, so quiet observation is key.
Our tour guide shared fascinating stories about how pirates used these caves as hideouts centuries ago, adding a layer of historical intrigue to the natural beauty. The whole exploration, from the lush tropical forest entrance to the dramatic cave interiors, took about an hour and a half and was a refreshing change of pace.
Botanical Gardens and Wildlife
The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park provided a peaceful escape into the island’s natural flora. We spent a good part of the morning exploring the beautifully designed gardens and walking along the boardwalks. It’s a wonderfully serene environment, perfect for a leisurely stroll and some quiet reflection.
The park is also home to the Blue Iguana Conservation Programme. Seeing these endangered creatures, which were once on the brink of extinction, thriving in their protected habitat was incredibly moving. Learning about the dedicated efforts to save them gave us a deeper appreciation for the island’s commitment to conservation. Lily was fascinated by their size and unique patterns.
Culinary Delights of Grand Cayman
Flavorful Dining Experiences
The culinary scene in Grand Cayman is surprisingly diverse and absolutely delicious. We found some fantastic restaurants, especially along Seven Mile Beach. woto offered innovative sushi and ceviche that was incredibly fresh. Coccoloba, with its beachside setting, was perfect for enjoying creative Mexican dishes while watching the sunset.
For a taste of traditional Caymanian cuisine, the Grand Old House is a must-visit. It’s one of the island’s oldest restaurants, and the atmosphere is charmingly historic. They serve up authentic local dishes, and it was a wonderful way for us to try some new flavors. The resident cigar roller added a unique touch.
A Celebration of Food
We were lucky enough to be there for the Cayman Cookout in January 2023. It was an incredible food and wine festival hosted at The Ritz-Carlton. Having the chance to see and even interact with world-renowned chefs like José Andrés and Emeril Lagasse was a surreal experience. The intimate setting allowed for genuine engagement.
The event itself was so well-organized, offering a fantastic opportunity to sample incredible food and wines. It’s a culinary event that truly celebrates the best of the island’s gastronomic offerings, drawing top talent and enthusiastic food lovers from around the globe.

The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands provided a wonderful glimpse into the local art scene. It’s a great place to see how Caymanian artists interpret their history and culture. The rotating exhibits mean there’s always something new to discover, and the sculpture garden is a beautiful outdoor space.
A particularly inspiring exhibit was dedicated to “Miss Lassie,” whose vibrant art transformed her home into a living canvas. Visiting her former residence, which is open by reservation, was a unique and memorable experience, showcasing a powerful artistic vision. It’s a testament to the island’s rich creative spirit.
Distillery Tours and Tastings
For those who enjoy a good drink, a visit to the Cayman Spirits Co. Distillery is well worth it. We took a tour to learn about their distilling process for brands like Seven Fathoms Rum and Gun Bay Vodka. It was fascinating to see how they craft their spirits right on the island.
Trying their signature drinks, like the Cayman Sour, was a perfect way to cap off an afternoon. It’s a fun, relaxed experience that offers a different perspective on the island’s local products. We even picked up a bottle to remember our trip.
