Grand Cayman trip recap: Fun in the sun

I just finished a five-day trip to Grand Cayman. I wanted to share some thoughts and observations from my visit. I found some truly lovely spots and had a few surprising experiences.

Hotel Indigo Experience

My stay at the Hotel Indigo was wonderful. The hotel has been open for less than a year. It feels very new and looks absolutely gorgeous. What truly made the difference, though, was the staff. Everyone I met was cheerful and welcoming. I’ve stayed at other Hotel Indigos in different places before. This particular one really raised the bar. It definitely offered a superior experience in every way. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a comfortable and pleasant stay.

Exploring Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park

I read some reviews that were a bit lukewarm about the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park. I think those reviews were mistaken. This park is beautifully designed. It’s a wonderful place to see local plants and animals. It also gives you a sense of the island’s cultural history. The highlight for me was seeing the iguanas. They roam freely throughout the park. I also saw the famous blue iguanas in their special enclosure. If you have some free time and a rental car, this garden is a must-see. It’s perfect for exploring. I would say it’s best for elementary school-aged children and older. You could easily combine a visit here with a trip to the Rum Point area of the island. It makes for a great day out.

Cemetery Beach: A Snorkeler’s Delight

Cemetery Beach is a quiet and beautiful spot. It offers excellent snorkeling right offshore. I found some great information about snorkeling there. There’s also public parking available, which is convenient. You’ll also find public bathrooms. For serious snorkelers, I found a fantastic resource. SnorkelingQuest.com has a Grand Cayman Snorkeling Guide. I paid $6 to download it, and it was well worth the cost. It includes detailed maps. It also provides information for all skill levels. This guide helped me find the best spots. It made my snorkeling experience much better. It’s definitely a valuable tool if you plan to snorkel in Grand Cayman.

Driving on the Island

Having a rental car on Grand Cayman is definitely worth it. It’s quite inexpensive. It also greatly expands the number of places you can visit. However, be prepared if you’re not used to roundabouts. Also, remember they drive on the left side of the road. It can be a bit of a challenge at first. Half of the drivers on the roads are tourists just like me. The other half are locals. They can sometimes be a bit impatient. So, I would advise proceeding with caution. It takes some getting used to, but it’s manageable. It gives you so much more freedom to explore.

The Island’s Feathered Friends

No one told me about the chickens! They are absolutely everywhere on the island. As soon as you leave the airport, you see them. They are pecking around the shrubs and running across the roads. I learned that they are descendants of chickens that escaped during Hurricane Ivan. The sound of roosters crowing became a constant backdrop to my mornings. It’s a unique sound that will always remind me of Grand Cayman. It’s a charming and unexpected part of the island’s character.

Grand Cayman Airport Experience

I heard some people complain about long lines at the airport. However, I didn’t experience any trouble, either arriving or departing. Everything seemed to move smoothly. One thing to be aware of is the food options in the terminal. They are quite limited. If you arrive two hours early, as recommended, you might want to plan ahead. You could bring some snacks or eat before you get there. It’s a small detail, but useful to know. It saves you from being hungry during your wait.

I am truly grateful for the warm welcome. The people of Cayman were so kind. My trip was filled with wonderful moments and discoveries. It was an unforgettable experience. Cheers!
