What truly sets Moorea apart is its dramatic, jagged silhouette, dramatically crowned by Mount Rotui. With a population of only 18,000, it retains a peaceful, uncrowded feel, reminiscent of Bora Bora before its bustling rise to fame. Mount Rotui, standing at 899 meters, is a constant, majestic presence on the northern side of the island.

Where I Stayed

Moorea offers a delightful spectrum of accommodations, from large international resorts to cozy local guesthouses. Even the larger hotels manage to preserve that intimate, small-island charm. While Airbnbs are popular, I found a wonderful deal at the Sofitel during the shoulder season.

Its location was perfect, close to the ferry terminal and a golf course my husband enjoyed. The resort’s lagoon, sheltered by the barrier reef, was ideal for snorkeling right from our overwater bungalow. This calm, crystal-clear water is a hallmark of resorts in both Moorea and Bora Bora, offering tranquility even after a storm.

Splurging on an overwater bungalow was a definite bucket-list moment! It felt incredibly luxurious. A smart way many travelers save is by booking one or two nights in an overwater bungalow and then switching to a more moderately priced garden-view room for the remainder of their stay. You absolutely must embark on a lagoon snorkeling tour. It was, without exaggeration, one of the most incredible experiences of my life! We chose a small, local company for a private boat tour. For three hours, we swam alongside gentle green sea turtles, graceful stingrays, sleek reef sharks, and more vibrant fish than I thought possible. The company even captured underwater photos and videos for us, and they kindly rescheduled our tour to ensure we had the best possible weather. It was a truly magical immersion into Moorea’s rich marine world.

Exploring the Interior

After marveling at the underwater wonders, it’s time to venture inland towards the mountains. We joined a 4×4 safari tour led by a lifelong Moorea resident. He expertly navigated us across the island in a rugged vehicle, offering an invaluable insider’s perspective.

From the vast pineapple plantations to the breathtaking panoramas at Belvedere viewpoint and Magic Mountain, the scenery was consistently stunning. Touring with a local guide provided such deep insight and appreciation for the island’s culture and landscape. We also met some wonderful fellow travelers on the tour, and even kept in touch with them throughout our time there.

Listen to the locals and fellow travelers for dining recommendations! Everyone we met was raving about Rudy’s, a steak and seafood restaurant that truly lives up to its reputation. We savored an incredible meal there, and the bonus is their complimentary pick-up and drop-off service. You absolutely have to try Poisson Cru, a beloved local dish. It’s fresh tuna delicately marinated in lime juice and coconut milk—utterly delicious.

And since Moorea is famously known as the “pineapple island,” the fresh pineapple is incredibly sweet and bursting with flavor! You’ll also find plenty of activities right around your resort, often centered around the inviting, clear waters just steps away.

Pure, Unadulterated Relaxation

Amidst all the exciting excursions, make sure to schedule ample time for pure relaxation. We dedicated one blissful day to simply floating and snorkeling directly in front of our resort. Planning your day around swimming, reading, and enjoying a refreshing cocktail during happy hour is a brilliant way to unwind and fully absorb the serene island atmosphere.

Another cherished memory involves finding the perfect spot for sunset cocktails. We spent hours just sitting in the warm water at the Moorea Beach Club, watching the sun paint the sky as it dipped below the horizon—it felt like we had the best seats in the house. The Moorea Beach Club truly offers a memorable sunset experience.

Moorea doesn’t boast bustling city centers. Instead, you’ll find a collection of supermarkets, charming little shops selling souvenirs and colorful sarongs, and a variety of restaurants and bars. This laid-back vibe is precisely part of its charm. You can easily find necessities, especially snacks to keep you fueled for your adventures, or simply unwind at a beach club with a cool drink and watch the sunset—an experience that stays with you long after your visit.

While it might sound repetitive, thorough research is key! I still cherish my old Lonely Planet guidebooks for foundational knowledge, but I also love diving into Facebook groups dedicated to travel enthusiasts. This is where you uncover those truly indispensable items for your packing list.

Essential Packing Advice

From experience, here’s what I learned you absolutely must pack:

• Duty-Free Alcohol: Resort drink prices can be quite steep, so bringing your own duty-free spirits to enjoy on your balcony offers significant savings.
• Your Own Snorkeling Gear: This allows you the freedom to snorkel whenever the mood strikes, right from your resort or any beach you visit.
• A Durable Pool Float: Perfect for lazy, languid afternoons spent floating on the gentle ocean waves.
• Water Shoes: The coral fragments and shells on the beaches can be sharp underfoot, making these essential for both comfort and safety.
• Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Absolutely crucial for protecting the delicate coral reefs and the vibrant marine life that calls them home. I packed bug spray too, but surprisingly, never needed it.

Also, pack more than one swimsuit! You’ll be in and out of the water frequently, and unexpected tropical downpours can occur. Having a dry pair always ready is a practical game-changer for comfort.

Visiting and Budgeting

Like many destinations in French Polynesia, Moorea can be an expensive place to visit. My best advice is to pay for as much as possible in advance. This significantly lessens the financial pressure during your trip. Whenever feasible, try to travel outside of the peak season, which typically runs from June through August. We visited in April and managed to secure some excellent, more affordable accommodations by booking and paying ahead of time. We enjoyed a week of fantastic weather, followed by another week of intermittent rain. Interestingly, you can almost disregard your phone’s weather app here. Moorea’s weather is notoriously unpredictable and rarely aligns with forecasts. You might see a 100% rain prediction and experience a perfectly clear, sunny day.

Managing Island Expenses

Be prepared for elevated prices across the board. Cocktails at resorts generally hover around $30-40. Look for those happy hour deals to enjoy a Piña Colada for approximately $15, or consider bringing your own duty-free alcohol and purchasing local mixers from a supermarket or even the resort bar. Food prices are also on the higher side; expect to pay $30-40 for items like burgers or pizzas, with full restaurant meals easily doubling that cost or more.

The most surprising expense for us was taxis. On both Tahiti and Moorea, we found that fares for the same route could vary considerably each time. A short ride of just a couple of kilometers might cost around $30, so always ensure you have sufficient cash on hand. After five full days on Moorea, I could have easily extended my stay, but with 117 other islands awaiting exploration in French Polynesia, my adventure is far from over!
