Aruba has a way of calling you back, doesn’t it? It’s one of those places that feels like an old friend, familiar and comforting, yet always ready to surprise you with something new. This past visit was no exception, a wonderful blend of cherished spots and exciting discoveries.
Aruba Arrivals and Beach Bliss
Our arrival day was met with the quintessential Aruba welcome: sunshine and the promise of relaxation. We settled into Joia, a place that always feels like a little slice of paradise. A sunset stroll along Eagle Beach is practically mandatory. The sand, the gentle lapping of the waves, that incredible gradient of orange and pink painting the sky – it’s pure magic. It’s moments like these that remind you why you fell in love with this island in the first place.
Dinner that evening was at Screaming Eagle. It was a quiet night, which allowed for a truly intimate dining experience. The food was quite good, proving to be a delightful introduction to the culinary journey ahead. Sometimes, a peaceful meal is exactly what you need to truly savor the flavors and the ambiance.
Eagle Beach Days and a Flying Fishbone Rethink
Day two was dedicated to the irresistible allure of Eagle Beach. It’s one of those beaches that just holds you. The soft sand, the clear turquoise water, the gentle breeze – it’s the perfect backdrop for a day of utter relaxation. I could spend hours just watching the waves and feeling the sun on my skin. It’s a constant in the Aruba experience, and for good reason.
Later that day, we decided to visit Flying Fishbone for dinner. Now, I’d heard a few whispers, some mixed reviews, but curiosity often gets the better of us, doesn’t it? And sometimes, as I learned that evening, it’s best to listen to those whispers. While the setting is unique, with tables right by the water’s edge, the overall experience didn’t quite live up to expectations. The food was on the mediocre side, and the prices felt a bit steep for what was served. Plus, sitting directly in the late afternoon sun wasn’t the most comfortable. In hindsight, it wasn’t the dining gem I had hoped for, and definitely not a highlight of the trip for me.
As the sun began its descent, we ventured to Baby Beach for the sunset. It’s such a different vibe from Eagle Beach, more serene and tucked away. Watching the sky put on its evening show there is always a treat. Afterwards, we found ourselves in the lively Palm Beach area, drawn to the sweet temptation of gelato from Gelatissimo. A perfect way to end a day, with a little sweetness and the vibrant energy of Palm Beach.
Oranjestad Charm and a Bistro Gem
Day three was a delightful mix of poolside repose and urban exploration. We spent the morning lounging by the Joia pool, soaking up the sun and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. It’s always nice to have a day that’s a little less structured, allowing for spontaneous moments and pure relaxation.
In the afternoon, we decided to explore downtown Oranjestad. It’s a charming part of the island, with its colorful Dutch colonial architecture. We took a leisurely stroll through the Renaissance Mall, always a pleasant way to pass the time and perhaps find a little something special. For cigar aficionados, the Cigar Emporium is a must-visit. We picked up some Cuban cigars, a nice little indulgence.
The evening brought us to Lima Bistro, and oh, what a revelation! This place was, without a doubt, one of the absolute best meals of the entire trip. Every single element was phenomenal – the food was creative and delicious, the drinks were expertly crafted, the dessert was divine, and the service was impeccable. It’s rare to find a place where everything just clicks perfectly, but Lima Bistro managed it. A truly memorable dining experience that I’ll be recommending to everyone.
Breakfast Delights and Beach Adventures
Day four started with a must-try breakfast spot: Linda’s. I’d heard about their banana pancakes, and let me tell you, they did not disappoint. They were absolutely fantastic, a perfect blend of sweet and fluffy. It’s the kind of breakfast that sets a positive tone for the entire day.
After fueling up, we took a drive to the California Lighthouse. The panoramic views from up there are breathtaking. It’s a place that offers a different perspective of the island, a sweeping vista that makes you appreciate Aruba’s rugged beauty. Of course, we couldn’t resist heading back to Eagle Beach. This time, the adventure called! We rented jet skis for a thrilling ride on the water and then took to the skies with a parasailing experience. We chose Delphi’s rentals. While their prices were a touch higher than some of the other vendors, they were one of the few who readily accepted credit cards, which was crucial for us as it was all we had on hand. Despite the slight price difference, the experience was fantastic. Seeing Aruba from above is an unforgettable sensation.
Lunch was a festive affair at Lola’s Tacos for Taco Tuesday. The tacos were incredibly tasty, a burst of flavor with every bite. We followed that up with a sweet stop at Noord Pastry for some key lime pie, a refreshing citrusy treat that’s always a good idea. And because no afternoon is complete without a little pick-me-up, we grabbed coffee at Santos Coffee. The day concluded with dinner at Madam Janette’s. This is one of those popular spots where you might actually have to wait for a table – and it’s worth it. The crab cakes were exceptional, a true standout. Our main meals, the jumbo shrimp and the pasta, were good, but it was those crab cakes that really stole the show.
Azia’s Lively Vibe and Culinary Delights
For our final evening, we had reservations at Daniel’s, but decided on a last-minute change of plans to experience Azia. I’m so glad we did! The atmosphere at Azia is simply electric. Lively, upbeat music fills the air, creating an energetic and fun vibe. It was such a welcome relief to be seated inside with the cool air conditioning, a perfect escape from the Aruba humidity. We indulged in a selection of their offerings: delicious noodles, flavorful dumplings, fresh sushi, and the star of the show for me, the orange chicken. It was wonderfully tasty, with a perfect balance of sweet and savory. Azia provided a fantastic and vibrant end to our culinary explorations.
Aruba certainly did not disappoint. It’s a place that consistently delivers on sunshine, beautiful beaches, and increasingly impressive culinary experiences. This island has a way of weaving itself into your heart, and I’m already looking forward to my next visit. There’s always more to explore, more flavors to discover, and more sunsets to chase.
